Networking, automation, assurance, test and measurement, architecture, and enterprise environments taught Ray to look beyond the visible failure. The useful question is usually what the parts are doing to one another—and what the system is rewarding.

Technical sales and customer work added another discipline: translating complexity into business consequences. An elegant architecture that no one understands, funds, or operates is not yet a useful architecture.
Operator
Real estate, hospitality, and operating ventures made abstract advice answer to customers, schedules, vendors, cash, physical constraints, and Monday morning. The system has to work when the meeting is over.
Synthetic intelligence
Modern SI makes systems economically possible that would have required a large engineering team only a short time ago. Ray’s work now focuses on deciding which constraints have actually disappeared—and rebuilding accordingly.
